Day 38 – Thur, July 10, 2008 - Eureka, CA to Mendocino, CA - 244.1 km/152.6 mi – Total 10939.2 km/6837.0 mi

Since we had already travelled on the Avenue of the Giants, we decided to take Hwy 101 all the way south to Richardson Grove. In Richardson Grove we were able to walk through a tree and follow a path through the redwoods that had descriptive signs about the trees. Saw our first chandelier tree. This is a tree that has some enormous branches which are the size of a smaller tree and start about 100 feet up from the ground. This gives it the appearance of a giant chandelier. Also saw evidence of fire's effect on redwoods and how they survive. The walk through tree is evidence of this. The tallest tree in Richardson Grove is over 370 feet tall.

Continued on our ride back to Mendocino and made a stop, near the intersection of Hwy 101 and 1 to ride through a tree in Leggett. This tree is 315 feet tall and is the best example of a chandelier tree that we've seen. Took a picture of Chuck Busch riding his Harley through the tree and will email the photo to him later.

Went to the North Coast Brewing Co. in Fort Bragg for dinner and I was able to sample another of their World Beer Championship award winning beers.

Shortly after arriving back at Joan and Paul's house we received the very sad news, from their Rabbi, that Joan's father and Ruth's uncle, Martin Ginsburg, had passed away in Ottawa earlier in the day. He will be very greatly missed by all of us.
