Day 28 - Mon, June 30, 2008 - Needles, CA to Bakersfield, CA - 458.2 km/286.4 mi. Total 9401.7 km./5876.1 mi.

Highest Temp today was 41C/106F
Spent most of today riding across the desert. A little cooler in this section of the Mojave than where we were yesterday, but still hot and drank lots of water. Good thing we have cooling vest and neck ties.
Went by Edwards Air Force Base but since it's almost 301,000 acres in size, all that we saw were fences. Just down the road was Mojave, CA which is just east of the Sierra Nevada range. Passed a junk yard containing wrecks of jets and helicopters. Could these be results of tests at Edwards?
From Mojave saw huge windfarms in the Sierra Nevada's. So many that I was unable to count them. Some were older designs but a lot are like the ones we see traveling through Ottawa. There are warnings of high wind gusts in the area for those hauling trailers and this may explain the huge numbers and the fact that they are the fastest spinning windmills that I've seen. Tried to judge their speed and sure that they are exceeding 20 revolutions per minute.
Approaching Bakersfield saw huge farming areas with production of potatoes, citrus fruits and various nuts predominating. Also saw many working oil jacks in the middle of the farms & orchards.
Went for a swim in the courtyard pool shortly after arriving in Bakersfield. This pool was a lot more refreshing than the hot tub like temperatures of the pool in Needles.
Heading toward San Fran tomorrow so expect a lot cooler temperatures.
