Another great day with just a few wisps of clouds in the sky.
Experienced dry desert heat for the first time today. Best I can compare it to is a Sauna without putting any water on the rocks for moisture. Very dry but still hot, hot, hot. Big difference from back home is that most of the moisture your body produces evaporates here so no dripping sweat.
Met Rick (BMW) & his brother Danny (Wing) just as they were getting ready to leave this a.m. They're from CA and have been on the road between San Diego and Kentucky. Rick said he's interested in visiting Canada in the future so gave him my email address to contact me for info.
As in NM, the desert has reclaimed most of old 66 or it is under I-40. Rode what parts are left but not those that are dirt. Also saw places in the desert where there are old telephone poles without wires. This usually indicates where there was a road (66?) in the past.
Since miles pass quickly on I-40 with it's 75 mph speed limit, spent a fair amount of time traveling the 28 mile road in AZ's Petrified Forest National Park. Great view of the Painted Desert and on the south portion saw petrified logs at various stops along the way.
Later in the day I visited a meteor crater that is 550 feet deep and more than 4,000 feet across. The rim of the crater stands 150 feet above the surrounding land.
Old Route 66 took me through Winslow, AZ so guess what song was going through my head for a while.
Should be in Pomona, CA in a few days.
